Have you ever scraped the skin of a supermarket apple with a knife and watched a white, flaky powder accumulate? That is chemical wax. Most commercial apples sold in retail chains and local fruit stands are harvested once a year, kept in Controlled Atmosphere (CA) cold storage rooms for up to 10 months, and coated in synthetic wax to make them look shiny and prevent weight loss from moisture evaporation.
While the fruit industry claims these food-grade waxes are safe, many consumers do not want chemical additives on their children's daily fruits. In this article, we explain why apples are waxed, how to detect it, and why we source only unwaxed, fresh-harvested apples directly from the high-altitude orchards of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
Why Are Commercial Apples Waxed?
Apples naturally produce a light, organic wax coating called cutin to protect themselves from moisture loss. However, during the post-harvest washing process in commercial packaging plants, this natural wax is washed away. To compensate, packers spray the apples with synthetic wax, typically:
- Shellac: A resin secreted by the female lac bug, which gives a glass-like shine.
- Carnauba Wax: Extracted from the leaves of the carnauba palm tree.
- Petroleum-Based Waxes: Cheap synthetic formulations used to extend shelf life indefinitely.
How to Detect and Remove Apple Wax
To check if your apples are waxed, simply pour hot water over them. If a white, waxy film turns cloudy and visible on the skin, it is coated. Alternatively, scrape the skin gently with a clean table knife; if a white residue flakes off, it is wax.
To clean waxed apples, you must wash them in a mixture of warm water, baking soda, and fresh lemon juice, scrubbing the skin thoroughly. However, the best solution is to buy apples that are never waxed in the first place.
The Orchard-Direct Difference: Kashmir & Himachal
We source our apples directly from the high-altitude regions of Shopian and Sopore in Kashmir, and Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh.
Because of the high altitude, cool temperatures, and volcanic soil, these regions produce apples with an intensely sweet flavor, crisp snap, and rich red color naturally.
More importantly, our apples are harvested, hand-graded in the orchards, and packed directly into ventilated cardboard boxes. They are never sent to industrial CA washes, and they are **never sprayed with artificial wax coatings**. You can bite into them straight out of the box after a simple wash with tap water.
